Shoulder Joint

 

Shoulder pain includes any pain that arises in or around your shoulder. Shoulder pain may originate in the joint itself, or from any of the many surrounding muscles, ligaments or tendons. Shoulder pain usually worsens with activities or movement of your arm or shoulder.
 

Symptoms

  • Inability to carry objects or use the arm 
  • Injury that causes deformity of the joint 
  • Shoulder pain that occurs at night or while resting 
  • Shoulder pain that persists beyond a few days 
  • Inability to raise the arm 
  • Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm 
  • Signs of an infection including fever, redness, warmth
     

Risk Factors

  • Elderly 
  • Heavy Lifting 
  • Occupational Injury 
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis 
  • Sports
  • Diabetes
     

Prevention

  • Avoid repetitive motion of the shoulder 
  • Warm up properly before exercise 
  • Perform shoulder stretches 
  • Stretch before and after exercise

  • Difficulty in washing / combing your hair

Shoulder Pain accompanied by difficulty breathing or a sense of tightness in the chest may be a symptom of a heart attack and requires immediate medical attention.
Visit your doctor if your shoulder pain is caused by an injury and is accompanied by:

  • A joint that appears deformed
  • Inability to use the joint or move your arm away from your body
  • Intense pain / Pain disturbing sleep
  • Sudden swelling
